Its all about coordination!

Your bridal party and the ‘look’ you choose really sets the scene for the wedding and so the fabrics, colours and styles of your bridesmaids need to be cohesive to the bridal gown.

There are a few simple rules to always remember to help you out:

1. keep the fabric styles similar. If the wedding gown is in a softer fabric, choose a similar softer fabric to give the wedding party a ‘romantic flow’. Fabrics like chiffon, georgette and silk organza all tend to work best together. While if the bridal gown is in a stiffer fabric, raw silk, silk satin and the shinier fabrics will give a ‘striking’ look and work best together.

2. Keep the colours on the same scale. If the wedding gown is in an ivory, that is classified as a ‘warm’ tone. Keep the bridesmaids in a similar warmth by choosing colours like a blush pink, champagne or pastels. A silk white wedding gown tend more to the cooler tones so colous like blue, green or even black leave a much more lasting impression and create a strong aesthetic.

3. Like the bridal gown, the bridesmaids and mens suit must follow in a similar fashion to the setting and general style of the wedding. For a more ‘casual’ beach wedding, shorter cocktail flowing dresses will not take focus away from the bride but suit the venue and scene perfectly and with fabrics like chiffon or georgette allow for the summer breeze to pick the fabric up and flow. For a more formal affair, or church wedding, longer style bridesmaids gowns or a more sleek look will suit the surrounding settings and tie in with the general ‘feel’ of the wedding.

Summer Brides

As the season of beauty, renewal and new beginnings, summer seems the perfect metaphor for a wedding. With the warming days and later sunsets the days are perfect for the outdoor ceremony.

Outdoor ceremonies come into play but be prepared, you never know when a shower may pass, so always have a back up plan in order or an undercover option. The lighting in summer from a photographers point of view in the late afternoon provides a soft backdrop and provides a sexier aesthetic for your love to shine through and blossum just like the beautiful summer day. Garden weddings provide a soft romantic touch with the blooming flowers and bright colours. To add that special romance to the wedding gown incorporate lace detailing or hand made flowers to make the wedding party flow with the natural surroundings.

Beach weddings are also becoming more and more popular with destination weddings such as those close to home of hamilton island or further away such as hawaii or bali. Beach weddings provide a relaxed beautiful atmosphere for those couples which want to celebrate the day with family and friends and ‘make a weekend of it’ to celebrate. For the bride, shoes can become a slight issue so make sure to wear a comfortable shoe without too much height and place the ground stoppers on the heel to ensure you do not sink into the grass within these destinations. Beach weddings provide the perfect backdrop for some truly romantic images and most of the destination weddings have packages which include a qualified photographer who knows the grounds and where the best light will be for the day. Soft flowing fabrics such as chiffon or georgette are the best option for any beach wedding. The fabrics flow in the summer breeze and give a relaxed look while still keeping it soft and romantic. Beading on the gown will be picked up by the summer light and so to make a statement incorporate a beaded feature such as a beaded waist belt to give that special look and make you glisten in that summer light.

Whether an outdoor beach wedding in bali or a garden ceremony, summer brides are fresh, romantic and soft and truly glisten in the summer light.

Wedding Styles Through the Decades – The Roaring 20s

Modern wedding dresses are often influenced by particular styles of key decades. With the adage ‘everything old is new again’ lets take a look through the wedding style files and see how you can replicate the look and feel of your favourite decade.

Lets start with The Roaring 20s!

Vintage 20s Brides

Vintage 20s Brides

The 20s were typified by the ‘Flapper Bride’, think of films like The Great Gatsby where glitz, glamour and drop waisted gowns were all the rage!

This was the age where Juliet headdresses were made popular (cap style veils), so-called because of its similarity to the Renaissance headdress of Juliet in Romeo and Juliet.

Dropped waist lines were also a key feature where the hips can be further emphasized by adding a knotted sash or a corsage.

With such simple silhouettes, 20s brides made ornate beading popular. Often in quite elaborate and ornate Art Deco styles.

So how do you add 20s touches to your modern day wedding?

If your wedding gown has a simple and elegant style, try adding Art Deco influenced crystal or embroided motifs on your shoulders or on your hips. For an subtler approach why not wear your very own Juliet style veil – choose something with some ornate beading to give it that WOW factor!

Alejandra de Bourbon

Alejandra de Bourbon

One of my favourite 20s interpretations is the 2008 wedding of Spain’s Alejandra de Bourbon  - daughter of Alfonso de Bourbon, the second cousin of King Juan Carlo. She wore a gorgeous understated 1920s inspired Chanel number. Don’t you just love the unconstructed style, a dropped waist, the whimsical tasseled belt, and those luxurious, long ropes of pearls around her neck. Then there’s that long, flowing Juliet-style veil . She is the epitome of 20s perfection!

Are you wondering if the 20s are right for you? Why not come in store to try the look on your self? The Haiku gown by Hilde Heim exudes the romance and nostalgia of the 1920′s but with a modern and contemporary edge.

Till next time, xx

Floral Fiesta

With spring and summer approaching, the use of floral and flower decoration to the bridal gown seems to be the number one trend for 2012. But how do you make it work for you and the type of wedding your having?

The floral aesthetic can be incorporated into your gown in a number of ways. Hand made flowers can be appliqued to the gown, or be made into a feature piece like a one shoulder strap, giving your gown a uniqueness and modern feel. Tie the floral into the design of the gown, by incorporating some shape to the body by way of a corset top, it gives emphasis to a slender figure while not being overwhelmed by such details as hand made flowers.

If hand made flowers are too busy for your personality it can be incorporated into a lace detail. Chantilly laces, have a number of patterns and scallops and a simple floral design in the lace can give your gown the freshness desired in spring and summer, while keeping to a classic and romantic style of wedding.

For those girls getting married on a beach or destination wedding, hand made flowers or fresh flowers for the hair are a must. They make a statement while keeping the ‘look’ soft and not over worked.

Whatever the style of wedding or the personality of the bride, the floral trend of spring and summer can work for you and is a real must!

Style night with Hilde Heim

Last Thursday 25th August we celebrated all things bridal with the highly recognized Australian Bridal designer Hilde Heim. The champagne was poured as the girls browsed through the exquisite gowns looking at all the different styles,  from the sleek silk satin gowns by Jessica Fontaine to the more ornate feminine detailing of Hilde’s personal design aesthetic.

The presentation by Hilde assisting the brides on shape, fabric and detailing to complement the girls figure, was truly insightful and a presentation surely not to be missed!!

Hilde gave us points on things that every bride should take into account…

1. Your personal style- what kind of bride are you? make sure the gown compliments your personal style and personality. Make sure it is “here comes the bride”, NOT “here comes the dress”. Remember you wear the dress, not it wears you

2. Always chose a shape that is most flattering to your body type. Whether you are an “x” or “y” shape, there is always a gown for you, but work with your body by accentuating your best features. Points to remember

-for the girls with a column shape, detailing such as ruching, pleating or                                      diagonal lines in a gown will help give you more shape.

- Girls with a ‘pear’ shape, try to keep the detailing up high on your                                             gown and a wider skirt at the bottom to give balance to your shape.

- While a girls with a bigger bust and “top heavy”, keep the lines                                                 simple at your bust with slight shaping, eg. sweet heart neckline. Do                                    not choose gowns with a high neckline as it will only accentuate the                                           bust further.

It was a night enjoyed by all with personal assistance by Hilde and the team at “The Wedding Boutique” to help girls work out that “special dress” for them.

I will leave you with Hilde’s wise words: “Are you in love?”…

You must love your gown, from the personality and style of it, to the fit and the way it makes you feel. It is the most important dress that you will ever purchase, so you should love it and it should make you feel as special as your man does!

Talking Fabrics

Late last year we wrote about the Top Ten Bridal Fashion/Style Terms and we hope you enjoyed reading it and learned a thing or two! Now to expand on that, let’s focus especially on fabrics, arm yourself with enough info before you start bridal dress shopping to make an informed choice for your big day.

Fabric VS Weave

Satin is not a fabric..satin does not refer to the fabric material itself, satin is the weave (the shininess of the fabric). So you can take silk thread and make that into satin, or you can take polyester and make it into satin. Ask your bridal stylist what the fabric is; if they say satin, ask, “silk satin?” If it’s “just satin” that’s code for “synthetic fibers that won’t breathe and makes you sweat more than in a sauna”.
Same goes for organza, taffeta, and tulle (more to come on tulle in a second), they can all be made out of silk, or the cheap stuff, so ask about silk.

Bobbinet=tulle

Bobbinet is machine made tulle, and unless it costs $4000 a meter and you can tell it’s hand woven, the tulle/net/whatever on your dress or veil is bobbinet. What does that mean? Well, not much. But if someone is trying to sell you on something tulle vs. bobbinet, they don’t know what they’re talking about. Yes, there are varying levels of delicateness of tulle, but it’s all the same thing.

Not all silks are equal

It’s true, silk is silk, but has it been treated with chemical dyes? Have they been spun paper thin? Too thin to hold its shape or stand up the the structure of the garment? Trust your hand and your eye. If there’s a soft natural glow to the fabric, you’ve got a good quality silk there. Too hard or chintzy a sheen, it’ll look striped in pictures. And fabric should feel good – so if the wedding dress feels good against your skin and moves well as you walk then you’re onto a winner there!

Ivory is Arbitrary

There’s buttery ivory, golden ivory, blush ivory, crisp ivory, strong ivory, pale ivory, deep ivory, light ivory, true ivory, rich ivory, soft ivory…and none of those mean anything either. Especially in bridal fabrics (the same colour from the same manufacturer could even have different colour ivory silk satins depending on the batch!), trust your eye and the colour of the wedding gown in store, does the colour suit your skin tone in store, do you like the way it looks? If so, ignore what the colour of the fabric is called and just ask for a fabric swatch to match your shoes and accessories.

Adding a Splash of Colour to your Wedding Day!

The other week a beautiful bride-to-be came in for her first fitting and I have to say that even though I loved her dress, I LOVED her shoes! She had a pair of the electric blue Kate Spade heels – what a great way to add some colour to your day and a subtle way to match your bridesmaid too.

If shoe’s aren’t for you but you still want to add a splash of colour, why not wear a statement necklace or a unique headpiece. As these pieces are quite flexible you can easily put-on and take-off as you please. Maybe a classic necklace for the ceremony with a statement necklace for the reception?

We’re loving Kate Spade right now but unfortunately they do not ship direct to Australia…however all is not lost, you can always use a shipping forwarder to have your parcels sent.

Happy accessorising!
